Hearts Throughout History:Valentine’s Day at the Crystal Pineapple

White Gold Heart Pendant with Diamonds
Today I heard an advertisement suggesting that men should buy women cell phones for valentine’s day. Where, I ask, is the romance in this gesture?
Giving a Heart Pendant means more than giving diamonds, sterling silver or even gold. The story of the heart symbolism hearkens back to myths of old and cultural customs in times past.
According to Gemaffair.com,
“The earliest recorded evidence of a Valentine’s Day card came from Charles, Duke of Orleans in 1415. He was captured during the Battle of Agincourt and was held in the infamous Tower of London. He wrote a love letter to his wife from the Tower”. Now that’s a Valentine’s Day story with heart!

Bellaonline also adds this sentiment: “In addition to love, the heart symbolizes the soul and the center of emotion and consciousness”.
Heart Pendants were even worn by entombed Egyptian mummies to provide the mummified soul with re-newed energy in his/her afterlife.
According to Budge E. Wallis’s The Mummy: A Handbook of Egyptian Funerary Archaeology, mummies wore “gold beaded necklaces” that often had ”a centre pendant in the form of a heart” (page 267).
In Irish Culture, the Claddagh ring(with its signature hands holding a heart)often replaces the traditional wedding ring.
